In a room full of eager kids and anxious parents, Google announced the winner of the Doodle 4 Google contest. The annual contest takes an interesting twist, as children from as young as 4, to as old as 18, compete for a chance to have their artwork displayed on the Google Singapore homepage on Singapore’s 50th birthday — a coveted spot for any budding artist.
For this special occasion, local students were invited to create a doodle encompassing their vision of Singapore’s future. The contest, which officially opened on April 23rd, saw an overwhelming number of applications. Many imagined Singapore’s future in their own unique ways, from Singapore as an underwater city to regular visits to the moon. The public voted from 23rd June to 3rd July, to help decide on the top picture for each of the 5 age categories.

A panel of judges, consisting of representatives from Google, MOE, NAFA, and DBS, then picked the overall winner from the 5 categories, whose work is now the official SG50 Google Doodle.
The lucky winner of the contest was Moh Juan Hayd from Beacon Primary School, a contestant from the 7-9 age category. Despite being one of the younger contestants, his vision of Singapore’s future will definitely capture the hearts of Singaporeans of all ages: his doodle, a rocket-powered MRT train winding through futuristic buildings, seems to draw inspiration from Singapore’s latest stream of mobility issues.

“Singapore will be powered by solar energy for the next fifty years. There will be no more pollution in the city and we can protect the environment. We will have continuous energy source. One significant change in Singapore is our transport vehicle. Having extendable rocket train will increase capacity of one ride and allow less waiting time. The trains will travel in modern tunnels. Both the trains and tunnels will run on solar energy. We will have no jam on roads. Everyone will be happy.”
That’s definitely a future I am looking forward to.
