No kids, a huge fan of Lego, and some cash to spare? Carousell has got your back.
You might have heard that barely two days after LEGO fan community Brickset broke the news about a commemorative SG50 LEGO set to be gifted from the Ministry of Education to local students, more than a dozen sets were already up for resale on local buy-and-sell platform Carousell. The 244-piece sets aren’t coming cheap either: while the commemorative gift is given free to students, a Facebook post by local LEGO fan Y S Tan shows that sets are going for as high as S$180. And this time, the craze isn’t even Hello Kitty-related!

If you’re wondering how exciting a LEGO set can get, this limited-edition one can be used to assemble three quintessential Singapore icons: the Changi Control Tower, the Supertrees from Gardens by the Bay, and Cavenagh Bridge.

It’s the kind of keepsake you’ll be able to pass on to your grandchildren — if LEGO still exists by then — and it’s not just stealing Singaporeans’ hearts. LEGO fans from Malaysia, all the way to the United States, are going crazy over our humble SG50 toys (looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of fans immigrating!)

As this Facebook user pointed out, the craze may not be entirely unexpected. Resales on Carousell are usually priced lower than the original items, but this certainly isn’t the first instance where collectibles commanded sky-high prices via enterprising sellers. Remember when Marvel and Disney figurines began appearing on Carousell for exorbitant prices last year?
But lest you think you’ll need to break the bank to get your hands on a set, don’t worry too much: when we last checked on Carousell, there were still at least a dozen sets available on the site, and some are even priced at $0. In fact, many are priced well below the $50 mark. Just be prepared to pay more when demand inevitably drives the bidding up.
