Looking to change your smartphone soon in Singapore?

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, which we wrote about this morning, recently announced that its entry level Hongmi (i.e. Red Rice) Android handset will be soon available in Singapore. It will be re-branded as Redmi.

According to reports and its Taiwan launch, it’s likely that the handset will retail at a very affordable price of US$135.

Here’s the specs of Hongmi:

  • 3G handset
  • quad-core MediaTek MT6589T 1.5GHz processor
  • 4.7-inch 720p IPS display
  • 8-megapixel rear camera
  • 2,000mAh battery

Earlier in January, Xiaomi announced that it is opening its operations in Singapore. We also reported on the news and noted that the entry of Xiaomi might pose a threat to Apple, which is losing market share to Android.

If the new Hongmi doesn’t quite suit your taste, you might want to wait for the Samsung Galaxy S5, which is rumoured to be announced at the February 24 launch event.

Samsung announced on Monday that it’s launching its next major flagship product at Mobile World Congress on February 24, with the high likelihood that the product will be the Samsung Galaxy S5.

As CNET pointed out, Samsung has a long history of introducing its yearly Samsung Galaxy lineup in this time frame, either in late February at Mobile World Congress, or in early March, like last year’s Galaxy S4 production in New York. There are also rumours of fingerprint-scanning features, similar to iPhone 5S.

So if you are not a fan of the iPhone 5S, Xiaomi’s Redmi or the Samsung Galaxy S5 might just be the right phones for you.
